At our house trimming the Christmas tree is always quite a project. We all claim to be firm believers in using systematic methods to accomplish our objectives. But somehow, in the excitement of the holiday preparations, in spite of the best laid plans, “system” is noticeably absent where trimming the tree is concerned.
Then the fun really begins. First comes the chore of placing the tree in the stand and cutting it to the proper height so it no longer scrapes the ceiling. Spurred on by the fresh, clean pine fragrance we are ready for the annual argument over the placing of the tree. There are three of us in the family, each with her own idea as to the best new location for the tree. In the end, however, the tree is place in the same place where it has stood for the last seven years.
After the first color has been added to the tree by the lights the job really becomes fascinating. Gradually the lack of system becomes less apparent and the work progresses smoothly. The ornaments are gingerly brought down and we have at our fingertips the gayly colored balls which bring an even greater beauty to the tree. First goes the silver tip ornament with its two tiny, tinkling silver bells to give the tree its crowning glory. Then we slowly work down–starting with the very small ornaments, stopping now and then to finger and admire a familiar ornament. In the middle of the job we each find our favorite ornament and make sure that it is given a place of honor where it will be shown off to its best advantage. Before we realize it we are down to the largest ornaments. The final touch is added by the silver icicles and there, our task is completely finished.
Now the rest of the lights are switched off and the tree lights radiate a warm glow through the room. We each sink into a favorite armchair and with pride and satisfaction look upon the completed “masterpiece.”
