Here are the things that come to my when I’m “just dreaming, thank you.”
I’d like my house to be located rather far out–not quite in the country but far away from the noise and confusion of a city. I think of this house as being on top of a gently sloped hill about an acre or so of land surrounding it. I’d like the grounds in front terraced and oh yes, I’d like a U-shaped driveway around the front.
The house would be all on one floor following the modern trend. I’d like a very large living room with a small dining alcove (which I think is better than the old fashioned dining room) across the front of the house. In those two rooms I’d be sure to have “picture windows.” I’d like to have three bedrooms, a den, a small modern kitchen with a breakfast nook, and a recreation room.
The rooms would be furnished with very modern furniture–a rug of one solid color, low, comfortable easy chairs–in short like the typical postwar furniture ads that appear in magazines. I’d certainly have no ornate carving on the furniture or antiques. I like mahogany and would be sure to have some mahogany furniture.
I’d have the yard landscaped to bring out its greatest possible beauty. I’d like to have several shade trees, pines and firs, and many shrubs. I’d have a flower garden of flowers suitable for bouquets near the house. I’d like an outdoor fireplace in the back for summer suppers and wiener roasts. Farther back I’d have strawberry plants, berry bushes, a large vegetable garden and several fruit trees.
