Dearest Folks:
I waited for a letter and as none came Monday & Tuesday, thought perhaps you had changed your minds about having me come up there. I’m glad to hear in the letter from you I received this morning that that isn’t the case.
That’s too bad about Mr. Grap. One never knows what’s going to happen next and it’s a good thing to have insurances paid up. A woman with three small children surely needs it.
It’s always so warm at home in the bedroom that I didn’t want to get warm nightgowns. Down here I wouldn’t wear them anyway. We sleep between blankets & warm nightgowns besides makes it too warm. My pajamas can stay up there — I wore them because I want to wear them out. Wallie has a heavy nightgown but he won’t wear it. I can bring that along — it has long sleeves and is in a yellow stripe. If you think I really need more, I can get some here. Could I wear my pajamas — they open in front & have long sleeves.
I did embroider those quilt blocks in pink and blue. I have another square completed & have started the third one. This one will go faster. I hope you will think the shades of pink & blue dark enough. They get so much lighter when worked up. I’ll get a pillow case to embroider — do you mean for the head?
I went downtown Monday morning — they had a sale on shirts so I got Wallie two, one in a lavender stripe and one in blue and black. Then I also got a blanket in white. I don’t know if it’s just what you wanted or not but we can use it for something I guess. Will it be too late if I bring it with me?
I also bought two more little shirts so now I have five of them. That ought to do for a little while.
There’s an excursion to Wausau this week Friday, Saturday, Sunday & Monday. Why couldn’t they wait a few weeks longer? The fare to Wausau is the same as always — $6.72. That cut applied only to certain places where busses ran and if it’s profitable they’ll change them all over, but when? I wish Wallie would let me go alone but he won’t change his mind I’m afraid. Does Herman Marquardt ever drive up to see his folks? I was thinking maybe we could get in touch with him & make a bargain, that is if he still has a car. Could you find out for me. We’d be willing to pay for gas & oil, and he’d have company going back to Milwaukee too. It will be quite a while before they have another excursion.
Wallie accidentally broke the bottle the doctor had give me for urine, so I didn’t send any. Ask Dr. Reist if it’s necessary? It’s real light straw colored. The Dr. we went to made one test — I had taken some along — and from that said it was alright.
I took our Christmas tree down Monday. The ornaments were getting dusty and the branches drooped, so it was time. I dusted the things and packed them away.
Sunday we got over six inches of snow but it didn’t last. The sun came out Monday & melted most of it. Yesterday it was quite cold but today looks much warmer. I have to go out this afternoon and will find out soon enough.
I’m boiling rice & writing this at the same time so I have to hop up every little while.
Those aprons are nice, only I have so many house dresses that they will all be out of style if I don’t wear them. I have several that can be fixed to open that way too. My smocks both are open, so I hardly think I’ll invest in more.
About the order, Dad can send a box of those cigars. Wallie likes them real well. I can have ice cream when he gets cigars. Dad can also send 25¢ worth of bars — some “Hershey with Almonds” & a couple others. And instead of a box of oatmeal, tell him to send some “Rice Krispies” if he has them and some “Wheaties.” We’ve eaten quite a bit of oatmeal and a change will be good. Also a box of “Grape-Nuts.”
We have to order another ton of coal today. Are you still burning wood? This coal we have certainly heats good — better than coke.
I can’t think of anything else right now so will sign off until later or next time. It’s 10 to 12 so I have to set the table now. Write again soon. I hope the laundry got there O.K.
Lovingly,
Mabel & Wallie
P.S. I just counted my house dresses and find I have nine of them besides a couple of old silk ones & that orchid flannel one. My blue georgette will be alright for summer — a slit can be made under the collar. Then my brown one is open in front and also that navy blue with the separate blouse. My suit blouse is open too — I can fix the skirt top different becasue it’s too close under the arms anyway. How long is that sale on? I’m returning the sheet to you — I think those aprons are nice but they have them downtown at Boston Store for the same price.
