My darling Sweetheart Mabel:
I just wrote you a letter a few hours ago but I don’t think another one would be out of place. I know my darling Sweetheart you’ll always be glad to hear from me be it that I open my mouth – talking directly to you or be it by letter – by “proxy.” Where do you suppose I’m writing this letter? Just one guess and the handwriting should easily tell the tale. It looks to be rather up & downhill? Here’s the secret – the pad of paper is resting upon my knees – I’m writing to you from my bed. Which in not such a very long time will be your bed. I’ll keep it warm for you for tonight, tomorrow & Saturday night. After that I don’t suppose I’ll sleep in it anymore. I bet you are wondering why I’m writing to you at this time in the morning. I just got in. I was out to my brother’s house out in the “sticks” & deep mud I make 5.00 for making out a fellow’s Income tax returns. I’m a modest sort of enor[?] that job was worth easily 10.00 but 5.00 was alright too. Eh wot sweetheart? I didn’t go down to the office today or rather yesterday but yesterday was Thursday & it’s now Friday morning I’m going downtown sometime today. As the sometime I’ll also go to the Library & return those books I’m holding. I’ll have to pay about 85 or 90¢ in “fine” money. Talk about a good – generous contributor I’m “it.”
Listen my darling, I have your picture resting on my dresser & you’re looking right straight at me. How I do love to just look into your eyes. And your lips, my dear heart are so sweet a kiss upon your lips means “the more you get the more you want” & I’ll never get too many. Oh my darling I love you so much! I last night bought some “Pinex” cough medicine & it is very good after only a few doses my cough is already letting up. Soon it will be all over & I’ll be all jake again I took Pinex about 3 years ago & it was it only thing that stopped my cold then. How are you feeling? Are you lonesome for me? I once upon the time owned a song entitled “Lonesome, that’s all” it is so pretty but maybe I’ll be able to find it & if I do I’ll bring it along. I’ll look through what’s left of my sheet music & bring along the best ones I have & play them for you my dearest darling sweetheart! Will you like that? Why should I ask such a question! You told me you liked to hear me play & that includes the mistakes too?
“Lonesome – That’s All” - "Lonesome - That's All" from Lonesome - That's All by Lambert Murphy (1927).
There is something haywire around this part of town – an ambulance just “scarted” past a block away from the house.
It does seem so strange to be back amongst the crowds. This seems to be quite a big city afterall especially after my barnstorming through the little bergs.
I’m going to visit my “pappa” sometime before he goes away again. I’m sure we’ll (he & I) will be glad to see each other again for a change.
Did you tell your mother about me sending her or rather asking you to give her my regards? What did she say? What did your sister say ujern[?] the answer I wrote her or that note she left for me? I bet she thinks I’m rather bossy telling her to help you, my darling & be good to you. Well my darling, while I’m me with you then should be somewhat who is considerate of you.
Are you having difficulty in reading the writing? I bet you’ll say – that’s a real crossword puzzle.
Is it still foggy at Wausau? It is very much so at Milwaukee the old fog horn is still belching away you know the lake is not so far from where Quade’s live.
My darling sweetheart I sincerely hope that you’ll bless me with a nice long letter when I get at Oshkosh. I’m going to try to sleep now.
Goodnight, darling of my heart
Your own Wallie xxxxxx
