Milwaukee, Wis.

3/14/29

My darling Mabel:

This letter makes the first one which you ever received from me, from Milwaukee.  Gee! but it seems so strange to write “Milwaukee.”  Wonder how long it’ll take you to get used to writing it.

How does it feel to get back into the “Harness” again?  I suppose it did feel somewhat strange inspite of the fact that you my darling, have been doing it for such a long time.  Did they ask you any questions?  I just bet they did & no doubt they were plentiful but there is always that good old answer “Nosey people don’t live long.”  Try that on them.  What did your mother say when she heard that you were to return to work again?

Did you feel lonesome for I today?  I thought of you so often.  Well my darling, sweetheart it won’t be long then we’ll be together forever.

It feels so good to be home for a change.  To hear the same old familiar wailing which Bobby likes to serenade the house when when he should come in, or get washed, or if he should study his lessons.  Right now he’s standing next to me & just asked me what this letter was all about also if it was a “job” to write a letter like this.  Such a foolish question – that’s one of my greatest pleasures – to write you my darling a letter.  I hope you enjoy them as much as that.

How do you feel today my darling?  I bet you were so tired today after my keeping you awake half of the night.

But tonight you can hit the hay real early and every night until I come to see you again.  Just think my dearest one day is already past so by the time you receive this letter it will no doubt be one more day less.

My darling Mabel it is all arranged for your stay at my house.  At first My Ma was afraid that you might be too “swell for her” but I convinced her differently.  She says she’ll be so glad to have another “daughter.”  She thinks you are very pretty.

I gave myself a treat tonight – I played on my piano for a few minutes.  But that felt good.  May I often serenade you?

My dearest I had to change trains at Green Bay at 5:50 A.M. & got in at 10:00 this morning.  Mrs. Quade was not at home when I arrived there & when she got in I was not home – but she didn’t have to be told twice because she saw the evidence – your picture & all my other stuff.  Is she glad that you’re not a Catholic she gets so angry at Oscar for marrying a “Crossback.”  We all will be so happy together my dearest.

It was just like summer here today.  There is so very little snow left.  I believe it was 60 above at noon & the sun was so nice & warm.  I drove Mr. Quade’s stupmobile this noon just think of it I didn’t even go to see my “can” I wouldn’t be surprised to see 4 flat tires on it.  But I’ll just let it sit till I get done with my road work.  Then I’ll work it and above all get the bearings taken up on it.

Well my darling that’s about all [I] can think of right now so I’ll sign off for tonight & write you more tomorrow.  With a carload of love & kisses to my darling from your darling

Wallie  xxxxxxx
