Chippewa Falls, Wis.
My darling, Mabel:
As I promised to write you as soon as I got back to Chippewa, I am now setting out to fulfill it, my darling. I don’t suppose though that you’ll be getting this letter much before Wednesday, for the reason that it’s now nearly ten o’clock P.M. It is the first opportunity I had to do it. I’ll now tell you of my trip. Remember my darling as I left you, you suggested that I’d better run so as to be on time? Well I started out from your house – Walking but it was not long after that I broke into a sprint and from the sprint into a regular so “many hundred yard dash.” You see, my darling if a “Cop” would have stopped me, (which sure as tooten would have happened were I to do such sort of thing in Milwaukee) I just would have told him I was following “the Spirit of the County – Marathon County. Now please my darling don’t laugh too hard at that one. I just tried to be funny – as funny as I look.
And imagine, my sweetheart after running so hard, fast & far I got to the Depot at 11:50 on the dot and no train there – It wasn’t there yet. Did I scare you that time? The train didn’t come in until 12 bells. I sure was sweating after that piece of leg work and did my legs ache me after I got settled on the train. Remember I told you of my knees aching while at your home? I got in at Eau Claire at 4 bells and then for the glorious wait or wake for six o’clock to catch the bus. But here’s what I did. I waited there alright but far was it from a “waking” party. I laid down on one of the benches in the C.N.W. depot and slept. I slept so long till I missed two busses. I got in at the Hotel at 5 minutes of eight. Just in time to wash up and go to work. But, my darling I at least had some breakfast. Today was an exception to what I told you last night – that the time never dragged for me.
It certainly made up for last time today. It seemed like a week. And the afternoon was the longest of all, and besides I was so sleepy I actually fell into a “snooze” and did I scare when I woke up. I reddened to way behind the gills and I thought sure that all the eyes in the place saw me sleep! But it’s over now so why worry? Honest, my darling, I envied you in your nice warm and soft bed. Did you sleep alright?
I got my room back again — #410. I’m rather glad because I got to like it.
Well my dearest, from all indication it seems that I’ll be back in Chippewa after Easter again. Mr. Mollerus today landed another job. He told me tonight that we’re coming here again in April – That’s nice.
You know what my darling? I now believe that colds are catching – I’ve got another one – It’s in my throat. I gargled with salt & baking soda just a few minutes ago. I’ll get over my colds but I’ll never look the same.
This morning I received a letter from my old pal in Milwaukee. He says that he was so lonesome for me isn’t that funny that someone in that City should feel that way?
He thought maybe that I was either dead or “pinched” – you know what I mean by that word don’t you? He tells me that his Sweetheart is not better yet.
How is my sweetheart feeling? Outside of a little cold I’m pretty good. And your cooking & baking is “safe” because I’m still alive after eating the cake & pie you gave me yesterday. How I wish that right now you could bake & cook just for you & I. Then I would be actually in heaven. I love you so much my darling won’t you tell me how much you love me? How is your mother & your dad… I inquire about him too my darling, although he don’t give a rip for me nor whether schose[?] keeps for me or not, huh don’t you worry, my dearest I’ll make him learn to have a little left for me in the end any how.
Now my darling, that I’ve told you everything that I’ve run across today, won’t you please try & answer me real, real soon?
With all the love in the world for you my dearest I’ll sign off and go to my land of dreams maybe I’ll meet you there tonight.
Your best pal & lover,
Wallie
