Oshkosh, Wis.
My Dear Mabel:
I bet you’ll think I’m “funny” or rather “early” in my start in sending you my letter. Please don’t think that way though. I feel that it’s no more than right for me to tell you at this time as to whether I arrived at my destination. I’ll start right from the beginning. I told you that we were to leave on that 4:10 train. We checked out from the Hotel with that object in mind. When we got to the Depot we made inquiry as to running of the trains, that is if our train would be on time. We were informed that the train we wanted to ride got stuck somewhere along the line and the chances looked pretty slim for our getting out of Wausau much before midnight. For a while I was real happy about that but that didn’t last long because word came in that that train would be about 2 hours late so the “old man” threw cold water over my short period of happiness. You ought to know why I was happy, don’t you? If you don’t know, I’ll tell you. So here goes. You see if the train would not have came in then we could have kept our date.
I bet you’re wondering what the enclosed envelope should have to do with my letter to you. Will you please hand that envelope to Miss Bloomquist then you might experience a nice big surprise. That is, providing she’s not selfish in telling you what it’s all about. At any rate, I’ll tell you right now. You’ll notice, dear Mabel, that the envelope of this letter is type addressed with typewriter I typed a few envelopes this noon at the office of the client I am working at. All of a sudden the timekeeper spied me typed the “c/o Marathon Shoe” etc. Then he said to me “Does Miss Bloomquist still work there?” I said why sure, old man. So then he immediately got busy and wrote her a note, for me to send along. He’s an old time “sweety” of her’s. She (Miss Bloomquist) ought to get a kick out of it.
How is the weather at Wausau? During the day we had regular spring weather here but should see it now – a great big snowstorm!
How did it seem to you not looking at my “maj” anymore? I bet you feel quite relieved.
Course I’m not up there to see you right at this minute, but I can see you looking right at me – with your sunshine smile & smiling eyes – Don’t think I’m trying to sap soap you. I mean exactly every word I said.
Your sweet smile & pretty face is deeply imprinted in my mind & memory – never to forget. Don’t think me forward, please dear Mabel, but will you or could you do me a little favor? Will you please try & send me a snapshot picture of yourself? Honest, I sure would be tickled to the bottom of my heart if you would do that little thing. Will you?
We got to Oshkosh last night at quarter of eleven – then we got a little bite to eat then I went to bed & tried to sleep – but I couldn’t sleep so I got up again & worked til 2 bells in the morning. I must work a little while tonight again.
That’s about all I’ll say today. Won’t you please try & answer me, dear friend?
I’m going to Milwaukee over Sunday but Sunday night I go back to Oshgosh B’Gosh again so if you care to write then please address me – c/o of Hotel Raulf.
I am closing now and will look forward to the pleasure of hearing from you.
Good-bye S’Long dear Mabel
Your friend
Wallie (Walter Polzin)
P.S. Please try & send me a snapshot picture – Thanks xxx
